Sophia Tran – Sustainable Living & Lighting Design Expert

Sophia Tran is a lighting designer and sustainable interiors expert who has spent the past 11 years working at the intersection of ecological responsibility and architectural beauty. Holding a Master’s in Environmental Design from Oregon State University, Sophia began her career with an international design firm specializing in LEED-certified multi-unit housing. She later transitioned into residential consulting to focus on sustainable systems at the home scale.

Sophia’s specialty lies in lighting ecosystems: how homes can reduce energy waste while improving lighting quality through intentional fixture design, orientation, and usage. She is an early advocate of daylight harvesting—the method of optimizing natural light for visual comfort and electricity reduction—and has designed systems that reduce lighting energy usage by up to 48% in retrofit homes.

Her deep familiarity with international green standards, including LEED v4.1, WELL Building Standard, and Living Building Challenge, enables her to guide homeowners in selecting sustainable, health-conscious lighting products—from zero-VOC coatings to FSC-certified wood fixtures and long-life LEDs with low blue light emission.

Sophia believes sustainability in design is not only about materials but also behavioral alignment. Her residential audits often involve analyzing occupant habits to adjust lighting controls, motion sensors, dimmers, and even circadian rhythm-supportive lighting in bedrooms and kitchens.

Some of her recent projects include:

A passive solar renovation for a 1950s ranch house in Portland,

A zero-energy tiny home in Austin with integrated daylight funnels,

And a luxury eco-villa in Bali using entirely off-grid lighting systems.

She frequently contributes to journals like Green Living Digest and has spoken at events such as the Annual Ecological Lighting Symposium (2021, 2023). Beyond writing, she volunteers with sustainable housing NGOs and consults pro bono for low-income housing programs across Texas.

Sophia currently lives between Austin and Da Nang, where she continues to experiment with off-grid, local-material-based home lighting design.
